Well, here we are, kicking off another year.
The only Michigan-related comment I’m going to make is that the men’s basketball team is on a roll. They’re undefeated at this point at 13-0 and ranked 2nd overall. The last time they opened the season this well was a 17-game run in the 2018 season where they finished 33-8 and made it to the Sweet Sixteen.
The women’s team is doing pretty darned well, too, at 11-2 and ranked #8.
Go Blue.

Middle Son and his girlfriend went to Dallas for aO$U’s appearance in the College Football Playoffs. I didn’t root for the Buckeyes, but I was sad for Middle Son that they didn’t win. That’s the second time he’s been able to see them play in person, and the second time they’ve lost.
Coincidence?
Gotcha Day
Friday (which felt a lot like a Monday after New Year’s Day feeling like a Sunday) marked the anniversary of Athena’s arrival. She’s been with us since 2017 and look at her now.
Calendars
And speaking of New Year’s Day, did anyone else feel like New Year’s Day was a Sunday? I went to the grocery the next day for our big monthly trip, and thought when I got home I’d have to start dinner, because it was Monday.
Except it was Friday, and we always go out on Friday night.
I’d lost track of what day it was in that phantom week between Christmas and New Year’s, and New Year’s Day felt like a Sunday for some reason. Does anyone else lose track of time like that?
Diana said she didn’t, because she was getting ready for a new unit at school and so was painfully aware of the days ticking away before she resumed classes.
Plans
What plans do you have for the new year?
I’d like to think I’ve got plenty, and I probably do. Will I accomplish many of them? Or even any? If past performance is any indicator, then probably not, but we’ll see.
There’s plenty of important stuff to do around Wayfarer’s Refuge, like dealing with the roof. I’ve got plenty of landscaping plans, but I’ve had those for years.
I’ve got writing goals, too, involving finishing several works-in-progress, continuing the blog streak, and writing more posts in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge.
I’m going to make a real effort to read more this year, too. I feel like that will help me “restart the fire,” as it were. I’ve been puttering along with Jeff Shaara’s To The Last Man for going on a year now, and I really want to finish that. I picked up a couple of Jefferson Bass’ Body Farm books at Bear’s Bookstore back in October and I haven’t even opened them yet.
So yeah, plenty of plans. Maybe even a few goals. But how much motivation do I have to accomplish them?
Sigh. That’s always the issue.
Happy New Year.
