This week’s prompt was, Will You Watch the Super Bowl?
Sure, I will.
There, that was easy.
Oh, you wanted to know why, too?
I love watching football. I do. It’s just a lot of fun for me at all levels. My grandson played 5th grade football last year and I made it to most of his games. I haven’t been to a high-school game in a while, but when I was a band kid, I was one of those weird ones who actually watched the game. I remember going to a few JV games too, just to watch.
I’m pretty sure I went to all of the home games for my freshman semester at Miami (OH). The school opened its brand-new Yager Stadium in October, and ABC Sports broadcast that first game, against Western Michigan. Howard Cosell lectured my Intro to Mass Communications class that Friday, which was pretty cool.
The other excitement that weekend was a student who rented a plane and buzzed the field. He’d rented the plane from an FBO somewhere, landed near campus, masked over the registration number, then flew low over the field during the pregame events. I think the authorities identified him within a few days. He lost his private pilot’s license, but I don’t remember him doing any jail time.
I’ve been to a couple of Michigan games as well as at least one aO$U game. Several NSU games and a few Marietta College games over the years. When I was in high school, our band played at at least one game, I seem to recall.
So yeah, I like watching football.
Who Am I Rooting For?
This gets a little more complicated.
I have two favorite NFL teams: The New Orleans Saints and the Dallas Cowboys.
I root for the Saints because that was my mom’s team, seeing as how she was raised in New Orleans. She was a fan from the beginning, all the way through the “Aints” years. Mom died in ’98, so she missed them winning the Super Bowl in 2010, but I watched it with some friends and felt her cheering right beside me.
Because I was born in Texas, I cheered for the Cowboys a lot, which, like my Michigan-O$U rivalry issues in Ohio, brought me a lot of grief because of our proximity to the Steelers. I was never really a Houston Oilers fan for some reason.
When the Saints and the Cowboys play, I root for the Saints. Dad was my tie to Michigan and college ball. Mom is my tie to the NFL, so it’s always the Saints.
(When I was growing up, other kids would tell me, “You live in Ohio; you should root for the Buckeyes.” I’d ask them who their favorite pro football team was, and they never chose one of the two Ohio teams. It was always the Steelers. I never understood that.)
Within the NFL, there are two conferences, each broken up into four divisions. The Saints (and the Cowboys) play in the National Football Conference (as opposed to the American Conference). The Cowboys play in the NFC East; the Saints in the NFC South. Since neither of my teams made it into the playoffs, I’m rooting for the NFC representative, which is the Seattle Seahawks.
Besides, my brother lives in Seattle, so there’s a little family tie to the team.
Where Am I Watching?
I’ll have to check with Middle Son. In the past, we’ve gone to watch parties with various friends. I think last year we watched over at Number Two Son’s house. But he’s working in Texas these days and isn’t always home for the weekends. Plus, when he is home, he leaves kind of early on Monday, so he may need to go to bed early for his beauty sleep. We’ll see.
