“She’s basically looking at this as a black-and-white issue,” said defense attorney Thomas Liotti. “People need some degree of hope, and under Kathleen Rice’s policies, they’re not getting it.”
So who is Kathleen Rice? What are her horrible policies?
She’s the Nassau County District Attorney, and she’s hell on drunk drivers.
Among other things:
Predictably, defense attorneys don’t care for her actions, as Mr Liotti’s comment illustrates. But it really is a black-and-white issue. How can anyone who’s been alive for more than 10 years not understand that driving after drinking alcohol is stupid, and in most cases, against the law?
I won’t go off on an anti-alcohol rant here; alcohol is not the issue. Impaired driving is. More power to DA Rice. Go get ’em.

I am so right there with you!
I agree. I’ve lost a brother and several coworkers to drunk drivers.
I was hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light. She hit the driver’s side door of my vehicle at over 60mph and it took the fire department almost half an hour to cut me out. She was unlicensed, illegal and uninsured and she was tested at almost three times over the legal alcohol limit.
And all our DA’s office wanted to give her was probation. Because of her actions, I have spent two years off work with 6 major surgeries and still have more to come. I will never have the full pain free use of my arm or leg again and our DA decided that this person, who chose to drive drunk, should be told “bad, no” and released.
Fortunately, MADD got involved and she finally got a token prison sentence for her actions.
I’ve watched the people who choose to drink, drive and put other peoples’ lives in danger, walk off with a mere slap on the hand far too frequently. My state has the highest death rate for DWIs in the country. And I’d love to have DA Kathleen Rice move to Texas. I’ll even help her pack.
