My heart goes out to the family of Baltimore Police Officer William H. Torbitt. Officer Torbitt was shot to death 9 January. By fellow officers.
I cannot begin to imagine what those officers are going through. But I also can’t forget all the times the anti-gun folks worry and fret about how civilians will fire indiscriminately in a tense situation. Was Officer Torbitt justified in shooting when he did? Were the responding officers justified? We don’t know yet. But Officer Torbitt is still dead by “friendly fire.”
Will this be treated as a tragic and unfortunate incident? Probably.
Would it be handled the same way if Officer Torbitt were killed by a civilian?
